Lovey dovey
when I first wrote this post, it was spring. Spring stirs in feelings of renewal, rebirth, growth, potential and of course love! Back in 2006, I watched an amazing movie entitled Nunta de Piatră translated to Wedding of Stone. After seeing the film, at my romanian language class we discussed this – so here’s some things that I learned, some things that I had already known related to love, marriage and just some other general things…..
about people
(f) drăguţă, iubita, amantă, gagică
(m) – draguț, iubit, amantamant = lover
a avea o/un ….fill in the blank with one of the options above. = to have a……
terms of endearment
scump, scumpă, dragul meu, draga mea, iubitul meu, iubita mea, iubisubstantiv
dragoste = love
iubire = loveverbe
a fi îndrăgostit de – to be in love with
a iubi – to love
a face dragoste – to make love
a-i plăcea – to like/love * see note below about usage
In english it is not always distinguished the difference with like and love, love is used many times in an expression that does not necessarily seperate…for instance when you return from a visit in another city and express your excitement and extreme pleasure – you might say in english ”I loved Paris.” In romanian you would make a distinction and say instead ”Mi-a placut Paris foarte mult.”
marriage/wedding stuff
nemăritate = not married
mărită – marrying/married but refers specifically to women
insoara – marrying/married but refers specifically to men
mireasă – bride, miresei – genitiv
mire – groom, mirele cu articol
in describing the movie…..
la sfârsitul primei parți sau la sfârsitul parți întoi – in the end of the first part
ambele, ambii – alt form of amindoua, amindoi – both
se țin de măna – they’re holding hands
fericirea – happiness, nefericirea – unhappiness
a rămas – to remain
liniste – silence, a tăcea – to be silent
prins = caughtpe de o parte, pe de alte parte = on one hand….on the other….
disparut pe nesimțite = leaves quiet/sneak away
arunca o privire = look at someone with a negative connotation/sense – a arunca = to throw
More to come on the subject of love. If you have a chance somehow to see this film, it is quite lovely – so do try!
