There are two common ways to say and write the future tense. Depending upon your learning style, choose the method that works best for you. Ultimately it will be to your benefit to know both but choosing one method to start is more productive. Originally my preference was to use option 2, maybe because I was more comfortable writing romanian then speaking. Now however, I realized that option 1 is mostly my preference, maybe because I do less writing and more speaking.

VIITOR

Option 1
The popular form (once you have memorized the conjugated verbs) is to put ‘o sa’ in front of the conjugated form of the verb. Following is an example -

Prezent – Viitor Popular
eu beau/I drink – o să beau/I will drink
tu bei/you drink – o să bei/you will drink
el/ea bea/he she it drinks – o să bea/he she it will drink
noi bem/we drink – o să bem/we will drink
voi beţi (dvs)/you drink – o să beţi/you will drink
ei/ele beau/they drink – o să bea/they will drink

Option 2
Another way is to use the infinitive form with a prefix that corresponds to the pronoun. Memorize the following and attach the infinitive form. It is not necessary when speaking to say aloud both the pronoun and the future indicator. Following an example -

Viitor
(eu) voi bea – I will drink
(tu) vei bea – you will drink
(el/ea) va bea – he she it will drink
(noi) vom bea – we will drink
(voi) veţi bea – you (dvs) will drink
(ei/ele) vor bea – they will drink

Lovey dovey when I first wrote this post, it was spring. Spring stirs in feelings of renewal, rebirth, growth, potential and of course love! Back in 2006, I watched an amazing movie entitled Nunta de Piatră translated to Wedding of Stone. After seeing the film, at my romanian language class we discussed this – so here’s some things that I learned, some things that I had already known related to love, marriage and just some other general things…..

about people
(f) drăguţă, iubita, amantă, gagică
(m) – draguț, iubit, amant

amant = lover

a avea o/un ….fill in the blank with one of the options above. = to have a……

terms of endearment
scump, scumpă, dragul meu, draga mea, iubitul meu, iubita mea, iubi

substantiv
dragoste = love
iubire = love

verbe
a fi îndrăgostit de – to be in love with
a iubi – to love
a face dragoste – to make love
a-i plăcea – to like/love * see note below about usage

In english it is not always distinguished the difference with like and love, love is used many times in an expression that does not necessarily seperate…for instance when you return from a visit in another city and express your excitement and extreme pleasure – you might say in english ”I loved Paris.” In romanian you would make a distinction and say instead ”Mi-a placut Paris foarte mult.”

marriage/wedding stuff
nemăritate = not married
mărită – marrying/married but refers specifically to women
insoara – marrying/married but refers specifically to men
mireasă – bride, miresei – genitiv
mire – groom, mirele cu articol

in describing the movie…..

la sfârsitul primei parți sau la sfârsitul parți întoi – in the end of the first part
ambele, ambii – alt form of amindoua, amindoi – both
se țin de măna – they’re holding hands
fericirea – happiness, nefericirea – unhappiness
a rămas – to remain
liniste – silence, a tăcea – to be silent
prins = caught

pe de o parte, pe de alte parte = on one hand….on the other….
disparut pe nesimțite = leaves quiet/sneak away
arunca o privire = look at someone with a negative connotation/sense – a arunca = to throw

More to come on the subject of love. If you have a chance somehow to see this film, it is quite lovely – so do try!

Dear romanian language –

You make me feel stupid sometimes. I know you didn’t ask me to learn you. Some rednecks in the backwoods, when they want to teach their children a lesson with a beating, precede the beating by saying ‘I’ll learn you!’ Still I say ‘I’ll learn you!’ but you don’t seem to care. You’re not afraid of the beating that I’ll give you.

I’m not usually one for victim mentality but, secretly I suspect that you must snicker and laugh at me behind my back. Clearly you are to blame for my inability now to complete sentences and spell correctly in my mother tongue. Our relationship confuses me so. I want to be with you 24/7.

Since I have been studying you, having attempted to speak your words, now I can no longer speak clearly or spell words correctly in either language.

Oh romanian language who demands my attention. Don’t you know that I have attention deficit disorder?

Oh romanian language your prepositions have many meanings. Don’t you know that I’m a simple person and this confuses me?

Your pronouns confuse me too. Yes, I know what you mean and still I want to be with you always. If i’m not careful with you, you can change the meaning of an entire sentence!

Your double entendre – I don’t mean to offend. But alas there have been times that I have. Yes, when describing a dogs paw – I had mistaken this word and well I am embarassed to admit the word that was spoken from my lips and it wasn’t only to God’s ears. Why do some days I love you so and some days you frustrate me?

When the sounds of each syllable resound in my ears – I think of music – I hear you and you are a symphony. Your sweet sounds spoken correctly are like drops of rain falling softly on water – filling me up and then rushing past me.

Oh romanian language…someday ‘I’ll learn you!’

with love always from your faithful servant,

Amy

When I was little Sesame Street helped me to learn words and numbers…while there are no puppets and guest stars in this little video of words, I hope that it will help you to master a avea. For english speakers (or just me) the confusion with “Eu am” lasted for at least a year due to my conditioning ’cause I am is to be…I think this was mentioned before, nevertheless, it is my hope that you can overcome this hurtle quickly. Hope you enjoy it. Also would love to know what you think – I was thinking of adding a voice to this for pronunciation – do you think that would aid in your learning of verbs or distract you?

Enjoy! By the way, future tense and past tense vids coming in the next days.

Uşa does not equal USA!

ușa = door

Unfortunately there is a lot of anti-american sentiment in some countries (not completely unwarranted.) This is not the case here in romania (fortunately for me.) In fact, it seems that most romanians really like the US. However, when I first came to visit here in May of 2005, I did not know romanians opinions about the US or about any subject in general for that matter. Well, one time when travelling to the train station in a taxi with my friend Bogdan, I noticed a sign in the taxi in BOLD CAPITAL LETTERS, it read –

NU TRÂNTIȚI UȘA

Well I assumed the worst, thinking that maybe the driver did not want to transport americans. So I sat quietly in the back and didn’t speak. Later I asked my friend about this and laughter resounded. He siad that he had wondered why I was quiet I think this is the first word in romanian outside of basic greetings that I learned and certainly it is one that I will never forget.

a trânti (uşa) = to slam a door (esc verb)

SUA = USA

writing numbers…..punct si virgula = point and comma

For americans – just use the reverse

american system = 10,000.00
romanian system = 10.000,00

Most of the world depicts dates as day/month/year and time is on the 24 clock. The US military uses this system as well. In romania dates and time are shown in the following examples -

12 Septembrie 2010
12/09/2010
12/09/10

No pm or am….when writing time use the 24 hour clock. When speaking about time you are not constricted to the 24 hour clock. Almost always you would only use 13, 14 or one of the 24 clock numbers when speaking about an event

Some examples

Someone approaches you and asks…

Cât e ceasul? What time is it?
E ora unu. It is one o’clock.

Your friend asks you what time the opera starts, you would use 19 instead of 7.

La ora 19 (nouasprezece)

Although you could use either in this situation you get the point, if you really need to be clear about the time an event begins then use the 24 clock.
