To anyone who is not just beginning this might seem obvious, but this blog highlights all kinds of situations and confusions that I have experienced. Maybe someone else has these problems as well. So, another subtle difference…. one of the first things you learn in basic lessons are questions – Unde esti? and you’re taught to reply…
Unde esti? = Where are you?
De unde esti? = Where are you from? (more often the formal is used - De unde sunteți?)
One time another student asked me Unde esti? and I thought that was weird (you know those gut feelings)…I knew that he meant to ask me where are you from but I knew technically he asked me where are you? So I just stared blankly at this guy and I think he thought I was weird. Well I must say luckily these moments of confusion on my part have mostly passed – I am told that I think too much!
p.s. another thing I learned is that when studying a language it is not a good thing to think too much….sometimes we just need to accept some things just as they are without analyzing them.
p.s.s Since I first wrote this post (it is from my original blog that I had started when beginning to learn ro) I found a romanian/learn english site you might be interested in…click here (link opens in a new window.)
